     BIOGRAPHY
Charles Heatley was born at Yambuk in western Victoria on 27th
February 1865. Around 1869 he moved with his parents to New Zealand.
Firstly to Geraldine and then to Woodbury, both in South Canterbury.
What year he came back to Australian is not known. It is believed
though that he was 15 or 16 years old when he left New Zealand. He may
have stayed with his grandmother in Melbourne, before venturing north
to the Kyogle District of northern New South Wales, where he arrived
in the early 1880's. There he had a carrying business transporting
goods from the Clarence River, possibly from Lawrence, to the
Stations of Kyogle, Runnymede and Wiangarie, a distance of 120 km. He
had a horse drawn wagon, pulled by 6 horses. This journey took two
weeks to complete. The same journey 100 years later would take around
3 hours plus loading time. It is also possible that he first worked
for his future father-in-law, as he had a team of horses and was
carting produce to the Clarence River.
Possibly he was living with Thomas and Caroline Reeves, and therefore
started courting their daughter Fanny whom he later married in 1887.
In 1890 Charles and Fanny selected land at Eden Creek and farmed there
until 1898 before selling the property. It is not known when he
disposed of the carrying business.
On the Birth Certificate of their son John William, it states their
address as "Rose Wells" near Casino. Whether this was what the
Property at Eden Creek was called is unknown.
In 1899, 3 properties, were cut off Kyogle Station and leased. One
being to C.Heatley. These 3 Dairy Farms were possibly the first in the
Kyogle District to make Dairying a full time means of making a living.
Charlie was not listed as occupying this property in 1900.There is
some confusion here about exactly where he was. His daughter Alice (my
mother) was born at Eden Creek in 1895.He must have been in the area,
dairying, as his family attended the opening of the Kyogle Creamery,
on 12th October 1998.
When the Bank of New South Wales opened in Kyogle on 14th December
1903, Charlie Heatley was the 3rd Customer.
In 1904 Charlie purchased land on what is now Collins Creek Road. This
land had been subdivided from Wiangarie Station. He named the property
"Hillview". There he set up a Dairy which he worked until his
retirement. The property was then split in two, and his son Jack
stayed in the main house while his other son Clarrie built a new home
on the other portion. They continued dairying separately until the
late 1940's when they both sold out.The original house was burnt down
around 1935-36.
Charles was a foundation member of the Kyogle Show Society and was
head Gatekeeper for 23 years. He also exhibited cattle, horses and
pigs at the show.
Charles or Charlie as he was affectionately known, was a Ruling Elder
of the Presbyterian Church. There is a window in the Church dedicated
to him. He was a very righteous man who believed in the saying " It is
more blessed to give than receive". He assisted the Parents &
Citizen's Association in obtaining better equipped classrooms and
improvements in the system of education for the boys and girls of
Kyogle.
Charles Montgomery Heatley died on the 17th January 1934, aged 69
years.

Individual Note:
     BIOGRAPHY
Fanny was a daughter of Thomas and Caroline Reeves of Fairy Hill,
between Kyogle and Casino in Northern N.S.W. Her mother's maiden name
was Clarke. The Reeves family came from Weston-on-the-Green,
Oxfordshire, England, in1848. They first came to the Clarence River
where they worked on Gordonbrook Station. They later moved to the
Kyogle District. Thomas was a pioneer in the dairy industry in that
district. Fanny was the second white child born in the Kyogle
district. First they moved to Stratheden, then to Fairy Mount, (later
Kyogle) then to the Dairy Paddock which later became Casino, before
taking up land further out, which they named Fairy Hill. The area was
later to be refered to by that name. In later years, a Post Office was
attached to the house. The remains of the house still stand today, in
2005.
A number of letters are held that were written to and from Weston by
Thomas and Caroline. A book has been compiled about the Fairy Hill
district. Many descendants of that Reeves family are scattered
throughout Australia.
In 2001, Allan & Rosemary Dawson visited Weston-on-the-Green. There
are still many relatives of the Clarke family living in the lovely
village. Little appeared to be known about the Reeves family, except
friends mentioned by Thomas in his letters back home. We were given a
tour of the village and met some Clarke descendants. We have a copy of
a book written about the village called "Weston Matters".
